Learn more →This was a government-run mechanical silk mill established by the Meiji government in 1872. Even after its privatization, it continued to produce silk and, as a leader in silk-reeling technology development, propelled Japan’s sericulture and silk-reeling industries to the world’s highest standards. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Tajima family, the Takayama Society, and the Arafune Wind Cave, it led the development and dissemination of superior silkworm breeds. It is a prime example of factory architecture blending Japanese and Western styles, and major facilities—including two wooden-framed brick cocoon storage buildings and a reeling workshop, each over 100 meters long—remain almost entirely intact as they were at the time of the factory’s founding.
